ジョゼフ・ラドヤード・キップリング (Joseph Rudyard Kipling, 1865年12月30日 - 1936年1月18日) は、イギリスの小説家、詩人で、イギリス統治下のインドを舞台にした作品、児童文学で知られる。ボンベイ (ムンバイ) 生まれ。19世紀末から20世紀初頭のイギリスで最も人気のある作家の一人で、代表作に小説『ジャングル・ブック』『少年キム』、詩『マンダレー』など。「短編小説技巧の革新者」とみなされ、児童向け作品は古典として愛され続けており、作品は「多彩で光り輝く物語の贈り物」と言われる。1907年にノーベル文学賞を、41歳の史上最年少で、イギリス人としては最初に受賞。他にイギリス桂冠詩人、爵位などを打診されたが辞退している。 キプリングの評価は時代ごとの政治的、社会的環境によって変わり、20世紀中にも対称的な見解が見られ、ジョージ・オーウェルは「イギリス帝国主義の伝道者」と呼んだ。評論家のダグラス・カーは「未だ解決されない、文化と文学の歴史における心情面の距離や彼自身の位置について触発させる作家である。
